Introduction to American Popular Music is a survey course that will familiarize students with the sounds of different American pop music from the early twentieth-century through today. Students will study cultural and social history of American popular music along with the analytical study of musical styles. All types of genres will be heard and discussed including (but not limited to) country, blues, jazz, be-bop, rock, and hip-hop. Students will develop critical listening skills that will enhance their understanding and appreciation for popular music, making them a more sophisticated listener and perhaps a more savvy consumer of American popular music.
