I’ve lived in Marietta Ohio my entire life, but have traveled to other countries including China in 2011. I’ve worked at Marietta College since 1994 and have been involved with international students long before I began working at the College. I’ve worked as a tutor as well as classroom setting. I helped develop a program connecting American students with international students for fun and friendship. I have a Masters in Education from Marietta College; presently teach 2 sections of ESL201 and FYE International Students. I’m also a mentor mom to 6 Chinese students, but have also helped any student who has asked for assistance and guidance. Although my home is small, for the last two summers I have opened up my home to visiting UIR students and professors as a “model” of what an American home looks like from the inside. I believe several of those students are attending your University at this time. These types of events have helped me to develop a course on American Culture. I really believe students would enjoy and benefit from this course. It would be my pleasure to teach an American Culture class in China.

SYLLABUS
Book used: “What Foreigners Need to Know about America from A to Z” by Lance Johnson +various other outside sources—no book is really need for this course.
Purpose of the course:
The purpose of this course is to give an overall view of what makes up American Culture. Since American Culture has developed from foreign immigrants and then changed to fit into the colorful and various ethnic diverse backgrounds of all of the U.S. citizens, there is no one particular item, event, value or idea which you can say represents ALL of America, except the importance of family. American culture is also ever changing and re-inventing itself. Although we are more independent and individualized than we were 50 years ago, family is still central in all of our activities and this is important to understand. A saying that most Americans know is that we can provide our children with two things “Roots and Wings”.
Goal of the course and learning objectives
Not everyone will have the opportunity to travel to America and not all of what is seen on Television is an actual depiction of America. American Culture has some best kept secrets such as “Black Friday”, yard sales, back yard barbeques. The goal and learning objectives of this course is to help foreign born people better understand what makes up an American. By understanding the reasons Americans behave as they do, a person from another country will be able to do business with more understanding of “why they do things the way they do”, as well as get to know the culture and the people in America better and perhaps develop everlasting friendships.
