Brief Biography of
Instructor
(within 200 words)
Prof. Groth, an American citizen, received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University. He has taught at major universities in the United States (University of California), the Netherlands (Leiden University), and China (Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and China Foreign Affairs University). He has also worked for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Shenzhen Government, and Bain & Company, a major management consulting company. Prof. Groth has lived about half his life in the United States and about half his life in other countries.

Course Description

The course will provide a comparative overview of important social and cultural issues in the United States and China. The course will use a multi-disciplinary approach and both macro and micro perspectives to examine several related and overlapping topics: (1) demographic issues; (2) ethnic groups and conceptions of ethnicity; (3) hosting of major international sporting events such as the Olympic Games; (4) women’s issues; (5) the “middle class” and its importance; (6) media and international relations; (7) global warming and environmental issues; (8) doing business in other countries
