The American Dream in 20th Century Literature
Enrichment Course

Class Times: June 26 – July 11

Professor: Marlis Paffenroth
E-mail: Paffenrothfamily@msn.com

Course Description

In this class we will discuss the American Dream through the eyes of Hemingway and Fitzgerald. By analyzing Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, we will try to understand what is meant by American Dream and determine how each author claims it or, perhaps, distorts it. In group exercises we will examine aspects of the early 20th Century American culture by studying changing gender roles, fashion, and art and architecture of early Modernism.
